Community and Integration Manager

My role at the Helen Bamber Foundation is to manage our Community and Integration Programme. For the survivors we work with, it is so important to have safe, welcoming spaces to connect with others and learn new skills. I believe that community instils in all of us a sense of belonging and support. It provides us with a solid foundation, from which we can gradually develop the confidence to pursue our goals. At HBF, we offer a Creative Arts and Skills Programme, made up of classes such as yoga, textiles, and digital skills. We also provide individual casework, supporting clients to access Further and Higher Education opportunities, mother-and-baby support services, and volunteering and training courses.

My approach to running programmes is inclusive, co-participatory and creative. I studied English and American Literature at Goldsmiths University before completing the CELTA qualification and volunteering as an English teacher and youth worker on education projects with refugees and asylum seekers in Greece and France. Before joining HBF in 2022, I spend four years at Refugee Education UK, where I led on an educational mentoring programme for young refugees and asylum seekers in South London. Prior to this, I worked at the British Red Cross (Young Refugee Service) where I coordinated a life skills project for unaccompanied minors in Camden.

Housing and Welfare Manager

I’m the Welfare and Housing Manager at the Helen Bamber Foundation, and joined the organisation in April 2017. I lead on our welfare and housing casework, working with and for our clients to make sure they and their families have somewhere safe to live and receiving enough support to meet their needs and any financial support they’re entitled to. I studied Arabic and German at the University of Manchester, and then an MA Migration and Diaspora Studies with Arabic at SOAS. Before coming to HBF, I worked at City and Hackney Mind as a mental health advocate and at Maternity Action, and have volunteered with a number of organisations supporting undocumented people including people seeking asylum, including Hackney Migrant Centre, Akwaaba, NELMA (North East London Migrant Action), the Children’s Society, Crisis and the Refugee Council.

Housing and welfare support is an integral part of HBF’s multidisciplinary care for survivors; we provided experienced and accurate advice and tireless casework to keep people safe. I am very passionate about this work, trying to help our clients and their families safely housed and fed, which is increasingly difficult in the context of the hostile environment affecting people’s ability to access shelter and financial support, whilst someone is still seeking legal protection in the UK, and once they have refugee status.

Veronica is a research biologist turned accounting professional because she found that she really loves working with numbers when she was managing some budgets in a research laboratory. She has been working in the charity sector since 2010. She joined HBF in early 2018 and has found herself working alongside a group of dedicated and passionate ‘fighters’ for the victims suffering from some of the worst forms of human cruelty. She counts herself working among them a blessing. She’s striving to support the team to make the best possible outcome for our clients.

Counter-Trafficking and Legal Policy Manager

I am the Counter-Trafficking Legal and Policy Manager at the Helen Bamber Foundation and I joined in June 2019. I work in both the policy team and legal protection team working on issues directly impacting those who have been survivors of trafficking.

I am a qualified solicitor and I have been working with, advising and assisting asylum seekers and victims of trafficking for the last ten years, initially at a firm in Nottingham before moving to the Public Law department at Duncan Lewis. Following this I worked for the Migrants' Law Project conducting strategic litigation and bringing challenges to secure safe and legal routes to the UK via the Dublin III Regulations.

It is great to work at the Helen Bamber Foundation and have the support and knowledge from our experienced multi-disciplinary team. The model of integrated care we use ensures that all of our work is client-centred with a trauma informed approach and this way of working encourages me that we are always acting in our clients' best interests.

I am a Legal Officer at the Helen Bamber Foundation and joined in March 2010.

I started my career as a trainee in general legal aid in 1984 and worked on Sikh asylum cases. I moved to the UK Immigration Advisory Service (Refugee Unit) and then to Hong Kong and Thailand working for UNHCR on the Vietnamese Boat People cases. I returned to the UK in 1991 and worked for the Refugee Legal Centre and then in private practice before joining the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture (MF now FfT) in 2000, first as a Policy Officer and then as the Legal Officer. I had brief stints at AVID (Association of Visitors to Immigration Detainees) and BiD (Bail for Immigration Detainees) before joining MF. I am part time at HBF and am the Legal Director at Forrest Medico-Legal Services (a Community Interest Company).

Working at HBF fits perfectly with my career trajectory; something of a specialist in a very narrow field. Working with Helen Bamber herself taught me how to listen. HBF is ‘home’.

Housing and Welfare Casework Coordinator

I’m the Housing and Welfare Casework Coordinator and joined HBF in April 2022. Our team works within HBF’s Model of Integrated Care to provide clients with advice and practical support to ensure they can access safe housing and financial assistance they are entitled to.

I studied History for my undergrad before completing an MA degree in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies. Before joining HBF, I worked with the British Red Cross Refugee Support team in Kent and the Policy and Advocacy team, where I focused on Refugee Family Reunion. I also did a placement with the Red Cross in Northern France, supporting asylum seekers and refugees in Calais and Dunkirk.

HBF is an incredibly rewarding place to work. I am constantly in awe of the resilience, compassion and humanity that our clients show in the face of increasing adversity and love working with and for such a diverse and interesting group of people.

I’m the Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor, and I’ve been with HBF since January 2018. I first came across HBF when writing a research paper on the practical needs of trauma survivors while studying abroad in London in 2015. After graduating university, I left the United States to come back to the UK permanently. I joined HBF first as a volunteer, then as a part-time caseworker, and finally as a full-time member of staff in 2019. My role in monitoring and evaluation lets me work across all departments to help the organisation continuously develop and improve our services.

I am the Referrals and Care Plan Coordinator at the Helen Bamber Foundation. I joined in August 2018.

I worked in the Arts as a researcher before moving into the Human Rights sector. I have campaigned in the UK for migrants’ rights and helped organise national and local campaigns around cuts to domestic violence services. I am dedicated to fighting for people who experience injustice at a personal and state level; working at HBF allows me to be constantly learning alongside others who share the same values and hopes for a better future.

Senior Clinical Psychologist

After completing my undergraduate at the University of Warwick, I earned a scholarship which allowed me to complete a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and work clinically in the United States. I then returned to the UK and worked as an assistant psychologist in Older People psychology services before pursuing my doctoral degree at King’s College London.

During my doctoral training, I chose to do my specialist placement at the Helen Bamber Foundation. The strong ethical stance of the organisation as well as the resilience of the clients I worked with inspired me and I was therefore delighted when I was offered a job as a Clinical Psychologist after qualifying. I’ve been in my role since January 2019. Along with my other responsibilities, I have been leading HBF’s partnership with Young Roots supporting the mental health needs of young asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors.

I have worked in NHS specialist trauma and complex trauma services across London. Apart from working with asylum seekers and survivors of trauma, I am interested in understanding and treating mental health difficulties in sexual minority populations often resulting from sexual-minority stressors.

I feel privileged that my clients entrust me with their life stories and I am passionate about honouring that privilege by accompanying people in their journeys of healing from trauma and injustice. I feel proud to be part of an organisation that cares for clients holistically, and aims to empower them and repair their sense of trust and belonging.

As the Volunteer and Training Coordinator at the Helen Bamber Foundation, I manage and provide support for the volunteers across the organisation, who play such a vital role in assisting the delivery of services to our clients. I am also responsible for the development and implementation of our organisation-wide training. I am proud to play a part in the fantastic work that HBF does and witness the life-changing impact that both volunteers and staff have on our clients.

Before joining the Helen Bamber Foundation, I spent time studying in Japan, and have previously worked and volunteered across the social care, youth work and charity sectors.
