Survivors of trafficking and torture often present with many different type of injuries, often partially treated or never treated, including fractures, wounds, or rape injuries. They may have many other issues such as neurological, gynaecological or respiratory disorders, either from injury or from working or living in difficult situations. We provide a long medical appointment so that we can help make sure they access the right health care.
WHY DO SURVIVORS NEED MEDICAL ADVICE?
Many of our clients have been unable to receive the professional medical support they so desperately need. They have difficulty accessing mainstream health care for multiple reasons. Survivors find it difficult to talk about their past experiences or health concerns often due to shame or the trauma that it triggers. Beginning to address their complex medical needs can be extremely difficult, and is compounded by limitations of time, accessibility and understanding within mainstream health services.
To put it simply, if Survivors are unable to access medical care for their physical injuries then they will be unable to fully integrate in society. They will remain severely hindered by their injuries, they will have confidence issues and may well end up being trafficked again. If medical needs are not addressed, Survivors will continue to suffer acutely.
