Our Research

WE ARE ALWAYS LEARNING FROM SURVIVORS’ EXPERIENCES

The Helen Bamber Foundation is committed to producing high-quality and relevant research to:

  • Continue learning what support, treatments and services are best for survivors
  • Gather evidence to challenge and change systems and policies that further traumatise and isolate survivors and increase their vulnerability to exploitation and other harm
  • Collectively bear witness to the policies and practices that impact survivors in the UK

Our Research Department is led by Professor Cornelius Katona, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. We work with several universities, organisations, charities, lived-experience leaders and early-career and senior researchers to conduct high-quality, trauma-informed and impactful research.

OUR RECENT RESEARCH INCLUDES

> A first-of-its-kind clinical mixed-methods study investigating the impact of hotel accommodation on the mental health of people seeking asylum

> A qualitative exploration of survivors' experiences of undergoing medico-legal reports

> A mixed-methods study exploring the impact of the age assessment process on the mental health of unaccompanied children seeking asylum

>A series of projects exploring the challenges people seeking asylum face during Home Office interviews

We do our utmost to ensure that potential participation in research does not place our clients in any situation which may feel like coercion, or which may be extractive. We want our clients’ voices to be heard and listened to every step of the way. Therefore, we have a Research Committee that meets every six weeks to review proposed research projects, and which includes people with lived experience.
