HBF Music Group CD launch: Much More Than Metal
04 December 2009

WOVEN GOLD is made up of people from around the world who have come to England seeking refuge from extreme cruelty in their own countries - from Burma, Congo, Eritrea, Guinea, Iran, Kenya, Kurdistan, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Uganda.

They are all clients of the Helen Bamber Foundation. Believing that creative interaction is an integral part of the therapeutic process, in 2007 the Foundation set up a Creative Arts Programme, of which WOVEN GOLD is a part.

WOVEN GOLD meets regularly with professional musicians who donate their time. They arrange traditional songs they bring from their own countries, devise their own compositions, and perform.

‘We are all outcast people, we are not allowed to do anything. But in this group we have a sense of belonging. I feel it’s my place, I am part of a community, and here I can feel a sense of achievement. I feel so alive when I come to the music group.’ Humera, from Pakistan

‘The group gives you a family, you are happy when you are there and that encourages you in life.’ Barrie, from Guinea-Conakry

Following the album release, Woven Gold is collaborating with composer John Barber and writer Peter Cann in the creation of a dramatic cantata. Consider the Lilies, celebrating the courage, resourcefulness and creativity people can summon up in the face of cruelty and despair, will have its world premiere in the Church of St Martin in the Fields on 6th November 2010. The cantata will be conducted by Howard Moody and feature counter-tenor Michael Chance, soprano Elin Manahan Thomas and baritone Omar Ebrahim. Woven Gold will be joined by two other choirs, one of children.

Much More Than Metal has been made thanks to Jazz Summers and Big Life Music Group.
