Helen Bamber Foundation Thanks the Players of People’s Postcode Lottery 29th March 2018

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery are helping refugees and asylum seekers in the UK recover from human cruelty, including torture and human trafficking.

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have generously awarded the Helen Bamber Foundation £750,000 to ensure survivors are provided with the specialist trauma focused therapy, legal protection, welfare & housing, safeguarding and integration support needed to rebuild their lives following atrocity. Your support has allowed us to work with survivors like Jin, thank you!

Jin’s Story
Jin* had been a renowned journalist opposed to the regime in China and was well known to international human rights charities and agencies. Jin had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent eighteen months in solitary confinement awaiting execution, and was repeatedly tortured during this time. He was released on the condition that he would become an informer. He escaped and came to the UK.

Jin was referred to the Helen Bamber Foundation, shortly after his arrival. HBF’s expert doctors found evidence of a possible head injury as a result of torture with neurological damage; episodes of loss of consciousness; loss of sight; pain and mobility problems. He suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including, nightmares, flashbacks panic attacks, high levels of anxiety, hyper-vigilance and an exaggerated startle response. HBF stabilised his symptoms and secured a reputable lawyer for Jin. On the basis of the medical evidence provided by our clinical staff documenting his physical and psychological injuries, Jin has now been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

Achieving safety is the first step. Jin can now confront the trauma he suffered through specialist trauma-focused therapy. He needs treatment to begin to heal from the long-term impact of his experiences. Last week, Jin started to see a future – one in which he will write again.

The Helen Bamber Foundation would not be able provide refugees and asylum seekers, like Jin, with the specialist care needed to live and safe, happy and healthy life without the generosity of the Players of People’s Postcode Lottery. We cannot thank you enough for allowing us to provide a compassionate response to the experiences of human cruelty.
