Britain’s young asylum seekers below the poverty line April 10, 2012
Survivors attending Helen Bamber Foundation who are particularly vulnerable occasionally receive money from our ‘emergency relief fund’.
This fund plugs gaps in support from other agencies, and helps our clients in often critical situations. Our small payments are spent on food staples, nappies for babies, or travel passes to be able to attend our therapy sessions.
New data released by The Children’s Society shows that child asylum seekers are living ‘far below the poverty line’ in the UK. This is due to some asylum seeker families receiving less than half of what an equivalent British family would receive in income support. You can read the Guardian article here.
In a climate of cuts and decreasing government support for vulnerable asylum seekers, our emergency relief fund is more vital than ever. You can contribute to our £20 and £30 relief payments to survivors by donating here.
